About Shunem Children’s Home

Shunem Children’s Home was born from the vision of Pastor Imbumi Makuku and his wife Martha, founders of the Kibera Reformed Presbyterian Church. After witnessing the hardship faced by young girls in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, they created a home where abused, orphaned, and abandoned children could find safety, love, and opportunity.

Operated by the Mamlaka Foundation, Shunem is more than a shelter. It’s a family. The girls live in a nurturing, faith-based environment with housemothers who care for them as their own. The home’s philosophy is rooted in Christian values, with a focus on education, emotional healing, and spiritual growth.

The girls at Shunem Children's Home

What makes Shunem unique is its family-style atmosphere, strong mentoring support, and commitment to empowering young women to thrive in society.

A Day in the Life at Shunem Children’s Home

The girls at Shunem begin their day early, getting ready for school and sharing a morning devotion. After a full day of classes at nearby public schools, they return home to study, help with chores, and spend time in joyful play. During school breaks, they work together in the garden, growing vegetables to support their meals and build self-reliance.

Weekends are filled with worship, music, and laughter. Birthdays are celebrated with cake and dancing, and holidays are times of shared meals and community joy. Each day is filled with small routines and big dreams.
